Background

Based in Radda, a jewel in the crown of Chianti Classico, Piero Lanza and sister Benedetta run the estate Poggerino, which they took over from their father in the mid-1980s. Since day one they have been at the forefront of adopting practices that we all now consider benchmark traits of great wineries; farming according to biodynamic principles, close-planting to encourage the roots to grow deeper into the earth, cover crops are planted, and the canopy is regularly trimmed, all to ensure that the vines are hardy and resilient and the soil is fertile.

Wild yeasts are relied upon in the winery to start the fermentation, with the use of concrete before the wine is then aged in old Slavonian and French oak. The resulting wine is beautifully balanced, perfumed, elegant, and full of Tuscan charm.

2021 Vintage - Chianti, Tuscany

Although one of the driest vintages in a decade, the summer months remained relatively cool, and vine stress was avoided. Most producers agree it was a great vintage with  low yields and high-quality fruit completing a trio of ‘great vintages’ since 2019, adding weight to the case that Chianti from top producers like Poggerino are some of the biggest bargains of the wine world.

Tasting Note

It is wonderfully fragrant and pure with rose petals, raspberry and cherry fruit and cinnamon spice. Upon opening, the wine unravels and displays some tobacco and dusty tannins unfurling layer upon layer with time in the glass.
